Although Ypsmael originally started as a recording project, his activities have so far mainly focused on live settings, deliberately using the differences encountered in PAs and amplifiers at performance venues as the basis of his sonic explorations. Ypsmael adjusts his free-form playing to tease out these very differences, he is fascinated by the variation in the responses that different PA equipment and amps can add to the signal and uses this element as an instrument in its own right. Opening up his sound palette to a range of musical instruments and electroacoustic improvisation, Ypsmael’s interests span a variety of musical styles as well as non-music formats. During the past decade, Ypsmael has been frequently collaborating with artists of other disciplines, developing alternative vocabularies of presentation related to performance art, contemporary dance, poetry and a variety of visual formats.
